Dick Dale is the king of the surf guitar, and there is no disputing this statement. In his esteemed 60+ year career, Dale has released what is widely regarded as the first ever surf rock instrumental (’s Let’s Go Trippin), pioneered the “wet” guitar sound by using heavy reverb effects, worked with Fender Guitars founder Leo Fender to produce the first ever watt guitar amplifier.

Many people like to surf alone. Because they can manage their time before, during and after the session, and because they can choose the break they prefer at any given time. Unfortunately, in many cases, we're not actually alone - we're taking turns in a ultra-crowded urban lineup where all surfers are strangers to each other.

Me? I don't surf. But I could see and understand the energy and excitement of going out for the day. It resembled my experience of going skiing alone and meeting up with people for a few runs or the full day. (Read A Solo Ski Trip is a Social Affair and Travel Solo for a Rocky Mountain High.) I've covered solo skiing on the site.

A brazen disregard for possible danger. Derived from a line by Robert Duvall’s character, Lt. Colonel Kilgore in “Apocalypse Now” in response to a soldier’s assertion that an area that he wants to surf is “Charlie’s point” He screams defiantly “CHARLIE DON’T SURF!” A more thought provoking way of saying “fuck that!” or “I’m not worried”.
